Mr. Hassen has been a prominent land use attorney in Southern Oregon for the past 30 years. In addition, he has handled over 600 adoptions (private, agency, stepparent, interstate, and foreign), mostly representing adoptive parents. His current practice emphasizes estate planning (trusts and wills) and probate matters. He is a member of the Jackson County and American Bar Associations, Oregon State Bar, and the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys.

His distinguished legal career began in 1965, when he clerked one year for the Chief Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court, William C. Perry, and also taught at Willamette University Law School. He and his family moved to Medford in 1966 when he joined the law firm of Blackhurst & Hornecker, which grew and later merged to form Hornecker, Cowling, Hassen & Heysell, LLP. He has been very active in community and civic affairs. In 1996, he received the Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation Distinguished Citizen Award. His community involvement includes the Jackson County Library Board, Past President and Board Member; Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Past President and Board Member; Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Past President and Board Member; Medford Rogue Rotary, Past President and Board Member; Southern Oregon Goodwill Industries Board Member; and Southern Oregon University Foundation Board Member. He has served on many ad hoc committees to study and resolve local land use issues for Jackson County, the City of Medford, and the Medford Chamber of Commerce.

He and his wife Ethel have four grown children, and six grandchildren. He and Ethel enjoy their grandchildren, movies, golf, and travel.
